Yamanashi Hundred Famous Mountains山梨百名山

"Yamanashi Hundred Famous Mountains" is a selection of 100 notable mountains within Yamanashi Prefecture, chosen in 1997. Yamanashi Prefecture is one of Japan's leading mountainous regions, surrounded by mountains such as the World Heritage Site Mount Fuji, the Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and Oku-Chichibu. The mountains are known for their diverse features, ranging from gentle hiking trails to challenging climbing routes.

Candidates for the Hundred Famous Mountains were selected through public submissions and recommendations from municipalities. The final selections were made by a selection committee based on criteria including "popularity among residents," "national recognition," and "historical and folkloric connections." The mountains are broadly categorized into the "Daibosatsu and Doshi Mountain Range," "Southern Alps Mountain Range," "Fuji and Misaka Mountain Range," and "Yatsugatake and Chichibu Mountain Range."

The "Daibosatsu and Doshi Mountain Range" features mountains in the eastern part of the prefecture that serve as water sources for Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures. All mountains in this range are accessible for day trips and are relatively familiar to locals.

The "Southern Alps Mountain Range" includes dynamic mountains such as Kitadake, Japan's second-highest peak. This range includes mountains accessible to most climbers as well as more challenging peaks, offering a wide range of options.

The "Fuji and Misaka Mountain Range" introduces climbing routes around Mount Fuji, including the Misaka and Tenshi mountain ranges to the north and west of Fuji. Mount Fuji, designated a World Cultural Heritage site in June 2013, has attracted renewed attention both domestically and internationally.

The "Yatsugatake and Chichibu Mountain Range" covers mountains in the northern part of the prefecture, including the Yatsugatake mountain range and Oku-Chichibu, with references to their connections to the Sengoku period.
