One Hundred Views of Suginami杉並百景
About this collection
The One Hundred Views of Suginami is a selection of 100 scenic spots in Suginami Ward chosen in 1992 (Heisei 4). It was selected through a review process based on recommendations from residents as a commemorative event for the 60th anniversary of the ward's establishment.
The purpose is to help residents rediscover the value of familiar townscapes. In 2012, an event was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the selection, including a photo exhibition. This selection is primarily aimed at residents within the ward, so it does not only feature famous tourist spots. It includes seemingly ordinary landscapes such as ponds, shrines and temples, and cherry blossoms.
The townscapes retain a nostalgic downtown atmosphere, and what one takes away from them depends on the viewer. It can be said to be a warm, small-scale selection of 100 places that evoke a strong sense of familiarity.
