The New Japan Top 100 Tourist Spots is a selection of 100 popular tourist destinations in Japan, chosen through popularity votes by category in 1987. Among the most popular locations is Cape Chikyu in Muroran. As its name "Chikyu" (Earth) suggests, standing at this spot offers a panoramic view that allows one to feel the curvature of the Earth. Typically, the horizon appears perfectly horizontal, but from here, the horizon appears slightly curved, which is a distinctive feature. On clear days, Honshu can be seen, attracting many visitors seeking spectacular views. From the observation deck on the cape, groups of dolphins can be spotted, and whales migrating nearby can also be observed, drawing attention from a wide range of age groups, from children to adults. Access is a 15-minute walk from the nearest bus stop and a 10-minute drive from the nearest train station.
Besides Cape Chikyu, another popular spot among the New Japan Top 100 Tourist Spots is Shirahama Onsen. Located in Wakayama Prefecture, Shirahama Onsen has many attractions, with Shirarahama Beach being especially popular. This beach stretches about 650 meters and is considered a resort area for people from the Kansai region. The sand here is characterized by low moisture content, a smooth texture, and fine grains. The calm waves make it an ideal place for swimming. While enjoying the beach is popular, Shirarahama also features an open-air bath where visitors can enter while still in their swimsuits, making it bustling with people during summer. The lively atmosphere is not limited to summer; in winter, visitors can enjoy footbaths while overlooking the sea, offering different experiences throughout the year. Many people who have visited various foreign resorts rate Shirarahama as unbeatable, and in fact, many foreigners visit annually to relax and rejuvenate on this beach.
