100 Treasures of the Islands島の宝100景

About this collection
Japan, surrounded by the sea, consists of over 6,800 islands of various sizes, including uninhabited ones. The Urban and Regional Development Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, aiming to promote remote islands, solicited landscape photographs from the general public and selected the "100 Treasures of the Islands" on April 10, 2009.
A selection committee of seven remote island experts, chaired by manga artist Kenichi Kitami, known for "Tsuribaka Nisshi," chose the 100 best scenes from passionate submissions nationwide. These selected landscapes encapsulate the unique nature, history, culture, and lifestyle of Japan's islands as "sceneries we want to pass on and utilize for future generations," ranging from Hokkaido's "Northernmost Kelp Fishing in Japan" to Okinawa's "Hateruma Island - Sugarcane Fields."
