Sapporo Hometown Cultural Top 100さっぽろ・ふるさと文化百選
About this collection
The "Sapporo Hometown Cultural Top 100" is a list created in 1988 (Showa 63) to commemorate the 120th anniversary of Sapporo's founding. It was compiled by the Sapporo City Citizens' Bureau, Citizens' Culture Division, based on public nominations from Sapporo citizens. The list includes 100 culturally valuable assets deemed worthy of preservation for future generations, such as buildings and notable individuals significant to Sapporo's heritage.
Monuments in the shape of three-dimensional rhombuses were installed at the selected sites.
Generally, Important Cultural Properties and Registered Tangible Cultural Properties were excluded from selection, although some were designated or registered after the list was created and are included.
Among the selected buildings are 46 sites including the Sapporo Church of the United Church of Christ in Japan. There are 26 archaeological sites such as the Shima Yoshitake and Kotanbetsu Hill. Nineteen streetscapes like Maruyama's 88 Sacred Places are included. Five items of equipment, such as butter and cheese manufacturing tools at the Snow Brand Milk Products Historical Museum, were selected. Additionally, four festivals and events, including "Edi Ryo-ka / Miyako zo Yayoi," one of Japan's three major dormitory songs, were chosen.
Unfortunately, some buildings have since been demolished, and some monuments have been lost, so not all 100 remain today. Nevertheless, the list remains a useful indicator of various aspects of Sapporo's history.
