Niigata Top 100 Scenic Spotsにいがた景勝100選
About this collection
"Niigata Top 100 Scenic Spots" was selected in autumn 1982 to commemorate the opening of the Joetsu Shinkansen. The project was sponsored by the Niigata Nippo newspaper. Selection committee members narrowed down candidates to 200 sites, and the final 100 were chosen by public postcard voting. The total valid votes exceeded 779,593. A book titled "Niigata Top 100 Scenic Spots" was also published by Niigata Nippo.
The selection committee included a diverse group such as the director of the Northern Culture Museum, the NHK Niigata Broadcasting Station chief, members of the Japan Photographic Society, painters and poets connected to the prefecture, and travel essayists, resulting in a varied Top 100.
The main targets were natural beauties such as mountains, coastlines, plateaus, valleys, and rivers, as well as historic temples and sites, showcasing Niigata Prefecture's characteristics from various perspectives.
The selected sites are broadly categorized into four areas: "Joetsu Region" (22 sites), "Chuoetsu Region" (25 sites), "Kaetsu Region" (33 sites), and "Sado Region" (20 sites). Examples include "Hidden Christians and the Village of Maria Kannon" in Joetsu, "View of the Sea of Japan and Sado from the Ryokan Memorial Museum" in Chuoetsu, "Sumikami Dam and Akasaki Mountain" in Kaetsu, and "Oosado Skyline and Views" in Sado, featuring many magnificent landscapes.
