About this collection
Nagasaki's New Top 100 Tourist Attractions were selected in 1979 with the cooperation of the Nagasaki Tourism Federation and newspapers, incorporating citizens' opinions to connect Nagasaki's charm to the future by choosing 100 tourist spots.
Located at the westernmost tip of Honshu, Nagasaki has a history dating back to the Azuchi-Momoyama period when Oda Nobunaga, one of the three great unifiers of Japan, was active. It prospered as a center of Nanban trade with Europe. Therefore, the New Top 100 includes historical buildings that reflect the deep relationship between Japan and Europe, such as the "Glover Residence," where Thomas Glover lived and which was involved in the distribution of European goods including weapons, and "Holland Slope."
Not only is Nagasaki the starting point of foreign exchange, but the New Top 100 also includes places that represent Nagasaki's unique geography. Because Nagasaki lies where the currents of the Sea of Japan and the South China Sea meet, it features fast tidal flows and a complex coastline, exemplified by the "Kinkai Rias Coast" and the "Shiotawara Cliffs."
Living by the sea involves risks, so there are also sites that protect fishing safety, such as the "Yumiharidake Observatory" and the "Iojima Lighthouse."
Nagasaki has flourished as a foreign trade hub for a long time, but there is one tourist spot that cannot be omitted when talking about Nagasaki. That is the "Peace Statue," which is included in the New Top 100. The atomic bombing by the U.S. military, which killed tens of thousands and caused lasting radiation effects, is a tragic event that Japan must continue to remember. The Peace Statue not only conveys the horrors of war but also symbolizes the wish for a future without nuclear weapons and for peace, making it an important site included in the New Top 100.
