100 Selected Water Villages水の郷百選
About this collection
The 100 Selected Water Villages consists of 100 regions (strictly 107) recognized for contributing to town development utilizing water. Selection criteria include efforts to conserve natural water environments, communities shaped by close ties to water, and recognition of water environments’ value from historical and cultural perspectives. Targets include rivers, springs, lakes, forests, rice paddies, groundwater, waterways, and ponds. Priority is given to regions promoting town revitalization through water-related specialties or preserving water-related festivals and traditional performing arts.
Additionally, flood control systems contributing to coexistence between nature and humans, historic canals, irrigation channels, reservoirs, and terraced rice fields are also considered. Not all sites are tourist attractions, but the selection offers an interesting perspective on the relationship between people and water in Japan. Using this list as a reference, one might reconsider Japan’s unique water culture, passed down as ancestral wisdom.
Globally, demand for water is increasing, and amid environmental concerns, new insights including for drinking water are sought. It is hoped this selection will serve as a catalyst for such awareness.
