Japan's 100 Famous Mountains日本百名山

Japan's 100 Famous Mountains were selected by the writer Kyūya Fukada. The list was introduced in his 1964 essay collection of the same name and has since been beloved by many mountaineers. The criteria for selection include mountains over 1,500 meters in elevation that possess "dignity, history, and individuality."

Records of continuous ascents of the 100 mountains often attract attention; for example, in 2007, a record was set by climbing all 100 mountains in 48 days. Since this selection is not intended for tourism promotion, it includes many steep and challenging mountains that are difficult for amateurs to climb. It is best regarded as a selection aimed at experienced mountaineers. However, it is very well known among climbers, and even more than 40 years after the publication of the book, many people travel nationwide aiming to conquer all 100 mountains, known as "Hyakumeizan Hunters."

Nowadays, many mountains have beginner-friendly hiking courses, so those who want to enjoy climbing casually should use those routes. Among mountaineers, "hidden hot springs" accessible only by foot are also popular. The essay collection is highly regarded as a classic, so those interested are encouraged to read it.
