Mahoroba Scenic Spots Top 100まほろば眺望スポット百選
About this collection
The Mahoroba Scenic Spots Top 100 is a selection of scenic viewpoints chosen by Nara Prefecture through a public nomination process. For example, the World Heritage Site Todai-ji Temple's Nigatsu-do Hall in Nara City is a representative scenic spot of the prefecture, offering views from the heights of the mountain summit. It is renowned for its beautiful evening views and has become a popular tourist attraction. From there, one can also see the five-story pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple, a symbol of Nara, highlighting the area's excellent vistas.
The Mahoroba Scenic Spots Top 100 includes a variety of locations, categorized by nature, historic sites, and shrines. For instance, Mount Ikoma, located on the border between Ikoma City in Nara Prefecture and Osaka Prefecture, offers views of Nara City and is also famous for its beautiful night views of the Osaka Plain. The sunrise and sunset views are spectacular, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the grandeur of nature.
The Karako archaeological site in Tawaramoto Town, situated in the Nara Basin, is a Yayoi period settlement ruin. The sunset views there are breathtaking, with the silhouette of the tower and the surrounding blue-green mountains evoking the ancient romance of the Asuka period. It is highly praised and recommended as a sunset spot in Yamato by the Mahoroba Scenic Spots Top 100. Such sunsets are rare and precious in modern times, making it a fascinating experience for those who appreciate classical literature and waka poetry to gaze upon these views and reflect on history.
Other spots include peaceful rural landscapes such as Gokenya in Kamimaki Town. The autumn rice ears and early summer rice planting scenes are considered spectacular, with beautiful sunsets over Mount Futakamiyama. Mountain village scenery includes the World Heritage Kumano Kodo Kohechi route in Totsukawa Village, which is well-regarded for its seasonal charm and soothing atmosphere.
