Top 100 Natural Sites of Lake Country to Protect and Nurture守りたい育てたい湖国の自然100選
About this collection
Shiga Prefecture has implemented the "Top 100 Natural Sites of Lake Country to Protect and Nurture" project to conserve and restore habitats of wild flora and fauna that need protection to prevent extinction and to pass them on to future generations. From January to February 2007, a first public nomination was held, and in March 2007, 54 sites were initially selected. Subsequently, a second nomination was conducted in October 2007. The selection committee re-examined newly nominated sites as well as those not selected in the first round, ultimately selecting 100 sites as the "Top 100 Natural Sites of Lake Country to Protect and Nurture."
This selection includes many familiar natural sites such as the "Lake Biwa Shore," a wintering ground for the Tundra Swan, and the "Hill Area of Ogi District in Otsu City," known for its terraced rice field landscapes.
The selection criteria, referencing the "Wildlife to be Valued in Shiga Prefecture (2005 edition)," include: the presence of species listed therein; the presence of native species not listed but abundant in quantity and quality; habitats supporting diverse wild flora and fauna with well-preserved environments; and the development of natural vegetation with a high degree of naturalness that forms the survival base for wildlife.
