About this collection
The "100 Selected Buildings of Tottori Prefecture" is a selection of 100 outstanding architectural sites within Tottori Prefecture, chosen to encourage renewed recognition of these structures. The selection includes traditional buildings symbolizing their eras, buildings conveying regional history and culture, and local landmarks. The aim is to increase public interest, preserve and utilize valuable architectural culture, foster new architectural creativity, and promote attractive town development.
The selection criteria are: buildings familiar to residents; buildings that tell the history and culture of the prefecture; buildings reflecting the local climate and lifestyle; groups of buildings forming distinctive streetscapes; and other buildings characteristic of Tottori's architectural culture.
The buildings are categorized into six groups: "Prayers of the Hometown" (shrines, temples, etc.); "History and Climate Narratives" (farmhouses such as rural village headmen's homes); "Invitation to Romance and Nostalgia" (townscapes, houses, modern Japanese-style buildings); "Breath of Modernity" (modern Western-style architecture); "Fragrant Tottori Culture" (postwar to 1960s); and "Bridge to the 21st Century" (contemporary architecture).
