100 Selected Fragrant Landscapesかおり風景１００選
About this collection
It is said that landscapes and tourist spots have distinctive scents, and the Ministry of the Environment has selected the "100 Selected Fragrant Landscapes." These include various famous places in Japan known for their unique and rich aromas.
From Hokkaido, the lavender fields of Furano City were chosen. Furano's lavender fields are representative of the city and are reminiscent of the lavender homeland in southern France. The source of the fragrance is primarily lavender and other flowers.
In Hirakawa City, Aomori Prefecture, the hedges of Onoue Sawara cypress were selected. From spring to summer, the hedges made of Sawara cypress are trimmed, and the scent released during this process was chosen for the list.
An unexpected selection is the Kanda used bookstore district in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo. Not all scents are natural; the unique atmosphere of the bookstores, some dating back to the Meiji era, is known for the distinctive smell of old books, which is the source of its fragrance.
In Kanagawa Prefecture, Hakone's Owakudani sulfur scent was selected. Although the smell of sulfur may be divisive, it is recognized as a unique fragrance and included in the 100 selected scents.
