100 Selected Japanese Landscapes Woven by People and Nature人と自然が織りなす日本の風景百選

About this collection
"100 Selected Japanese Landscapes Woven by People and Nature" is a collection of one hundred landscapes chosen in 2005 through a public contest as part of the Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan. These landscapes were selected for their embodiment of the coexistence between nature and people throughout Japanese history, representing scenes that are, so to speak, integrated into human life. The purpose is to deepen understanding of the "wisdom of nature."
A total of 1,071 candidate sites were considered, from which 100 historically rooted locations closely connected to local life were selected. The selections include a variety of scenes such as rural landscapes, shrines and temples, townscapes, forests, and festival scenes.
Not all of these landscapes are famous tourist spots, but they undoubtedly represent tangible and intangible heritage that should be preserved for future generations. Some evoke nostalgic scenes reminiscent of the good old days, such as the townscape with covered arcades in Joetsu City, Niigata Prefecture, while others include majestic landscapes that teach the harshness of nature, like Mount Hiei, the sacred mountain protecting Kyoto.
Of course, many well-known tourist destinations are included, such as the scenery around Horyu-ji Temple in Nara Prefecture and the Tottori Sand Dunes. Additionally, historically significant structures like the Atomic Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Park are also part of the selection. This collection can be seen as a comprehensive view reflecting the formation of Japan as a nation.
