Furusato Miyagi Cultural Top 100ふるさとみやぎ文化百選
About this collection
The Furusato Miyagi Cultural Top 100 was selected with the philosophy of re-recognizing the culture of Miyagi Prefecture and rediscovering new attractions of the local area to promote the creation of local culture. In 1982, the "Festival Edition," which gathered festivals held in Miyagi Prefecture, was selected, followed by the "Taste Edition," which compiled local cuisine. In 1985, the "Buildings and Streets Edition," which collected castle ruins and historic buildings, was selected. In 1986, the "Promenade Edition," featuring charming scenic alleys, was chosen. These editions collectively represent the cultural, historical, and scenic elements of Miyagi Prefecture that should be preserved for future generations.
A distinctive feature of the selection process is that it reflects not only the opinions of selectors but also extensively incorporates the voices of Miyagi residents. This means many of the chosen cultural and scenic spots are those that locals feel close to and cherish.
Sendai City, the prefectural capital of Miyagi and also known as the 'City of Trees,' is a popular tourist destination characterized by its lush greenery and the orderly castle town ruled by the Date family. Beyond this, Miyagi Prefecture is known for scenic spots such as Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Great Views, and beautiful mountain valleys shaped by its mountainous terrain. The coastal area is famous for its abundant seafood, while the inland region is well-known as a rice-producing area. Many people are familiar with specialties like zunda (sweet edamame paste) and gyutan (beef tongue), but Miyagi boasts many other gourmet delights.
The Furusato Miyagi Cultural Top 100, which gathers attractions from the perspective of local residents, is useful not only for Miyagi citizens but also for visitors seeking to discover unknown charms of the prefecture.
